Unhealthy Geek update. Dubai Flu

Wednesday, July 4th, 2007

Urgh. One of the side effects of dating a stewardess, is that they get exposed to flu bugs from all over the world. They then come home and give them to you.

Hence, I’m suffering from Dubai Flu. I’m getting through tissue at a rate of knots. Yuck.

Healthier Geek

Friday, March 9th, 2007

Oh dear - this could be trouble. Publicly saying that I need to loose size in order to look good at Mike and Angel’s wedding.

And then this post from Suw and my suggestions in the comments….
And so is born the Healthier Geek project. May God bless all who sail in her.

Anyone want to join in? Pledges or heckles in the comments please.

Blog improvements

Friday, March 9th, 2007

Following Mike’s addition of Gravitars, I’ve been spured into action. Not only have I also implemented Gravitars, but in a pathetic show of technical one-upmanship, I’ve also included OpenID. You can now login and post comments using your OpenID, here’s how to get started with OpenID.

Such geekyness brings gladness to my heart.

I’m off to write some perl now :-)

Server downtime

Tuesday, February 20th, 2007

Eeeeek. It all got a bit hairy then.
My powerswtich got a case of amnesia and forgot it had things plugged into it. Opps. It then looks like it randomly turned off my server, killing the RAID array and the boot sector on the way down.
Something is wrong

Luckily my colo host uk solutions who come highly recommended were complete stars and have been helping me sort things out remotely. A case of beer is heading their way!

Still in the early stages of recovery, but good progress so far.
updates if I’m able to.

Random DB selection

Friday, January 5th, 2007

SELECT * FROM table ORDER BY RANDOM() LIMIT 1

Oh God, this solves quite a few problems for me at the moment. If only I’d spotted this a month ago.

sigh.

back to the drawing board.

Update: for other RDBMs
Update2: After reading all the comments on Daily WTF I think I’ll just go and hide in a dark room for a few days and pretend it all never happened.

Three times the cost

Friday, October 13th, 2006

I just joined the $100 laptop for $300 pledge over at pledgebank.

“I will purchase the $100 laptop at $300 but only if 100,000 other will too.”

The idea being that I get one laptop, and two are sent to the developing world on my behalf. Seems like a) a good cause and b) a good way to get my hands on a cheap laptop!
The count is way down at less than 3500 with only the remainder of October to go. I’m not hopeful that the pledge will be met, but, if there are 96,500 people like me out there who are holding out to the last minute then we might just make it.

<inspiration>

The blog is dead. Long live the blog.

Friday, June 30th, 2006

Ok, so I’ve blown away my previous site and I’m in the process of re-writing the whole thing. Until I’ve got the whole WordPress customisation thing sorted I’m sticking with the default theme.

Updates soon.
