Logical Arguments

Friday, April 20th, 2007

While the debate on Copyright Infringement continues over on Scott Adams‘ blog, one of the comments made me laugh, so I thought I’d infringe a little myself - here’s a verbatim copy :-)

Amazingly Bad Analogy
Example: You can train a dog to fetch a stick. Therefore, you can train a potato to dance.

Faulty Cause and Effect
Example: On the basis of my observations, wearing huge trousers makes you fat.

I am the World
Example: I don’t listen to country music. Therefore, country music is not popular.

Generalizing from Self
Example: I’m a liar. Therefore, I don’t believe what you’re saying.

Total Logical Disconnect
Example: I enjoy pasta because my house is made of bricks.

Judging Things Without Comparison to Alternatives
Example: I don’t invest in US Treasury bills. There’s too much risk.

Ignorance of statistics
Example: I’m putting ALL of my money on the lottery this week because the jackpot is so big.

Irrelevant Comparisons
Example: A hundred dollars is a good price for a toaster, compared to buying a Ferrari.

Incompleteness as Proof of Defect
Example: Your theory of gravity doesn’t address the question of why there are no unicorns, so it must be wrong.

Following the Advice of Known Idiots
Example: Uncle Billy says pork makes you smarter. That’s good enough for me!

Faulty Pattern Recognition
Example: His last six wives were murdered mysteriously. I hope to be wife number seven.

Failure to Recognise what’s Important
Example: My house is on fire! Quick, call the post office and tell them to hold my mail!

Ignoring all Anecdotal Evidence
Example: I always get hives immediately after eating strawberries. But withouta scientifically controlled experiment, it’s not reliable data. So I continue to eat strawberries every day, since I can’t tell if they cause hives.

Inability to Understand That Some Things Have Multiple Causes
Example: The Beatles were popular for one reason only: They were good singers.

Judging the Whole by One of Its Characteristics
Example: The sun causes sunburns. Therefore, the planet would be better off without the sun.

Taking Things to Their Illogical Conclusion
Example: If you let your barber cut your hair, the next thing you know he’ll be lopping off your limbs!

Proof by Lack of Evidence
Example: I’ve never seen you drunk, so you must be one of those Amish people.

Keep the BBC DRM free!

Thursday, February 1st, 2007

Go here:BBC

Answer the questions respectly.

Point out that using DRM is a boneheaded decision. Respectfully.

Seriously though, the BBC should be pushing boundaries in broadcasting, but using DRM to cripple the content and force everyone to use Microsoft Windows as a platform is not in keeping with the principals of the BBC. Lets hope that we can change their mind.

Supporting ORG

Tuesday, January 23rd, 2007

As Suw puts it, it’s that time of year again.

Time to anti in for the next round of copyfighting.

ORG made big strides last year, formation of the group, organising of the copyfigters (among others), the Gowers review and the hiring of a full time Exec Director. Good stuff.

No term extension?

Monday, November 27th, 2006

Via bb. If this rumour turns out to be true, then I’m disproportionately excited about this.
It seems that the work of the Open Rights Group (disclaimer, I’m a proud member of the ‘Founding 1000’) and other public interest groups have succeeded in moving the debate on copyright away from the big labels and entertainment industry and back to the benefits of limited copyright term to society.

It looks like the copyright term won’t be extended to 95 years! Yay! That means more music falls into the public domain and the culture of society gets it’s payback.

I’m a criminal. Help me change the law.

Saturday, November 18th, 2006

I own both CDs and an MP3 player. I copied the CDs to the MP3 player so I could listen to them on the move.
My CD, my MP3 player. No third parties involved. Right?

Wrong.

The third party is the rights holder, and I’m in breach of UK copyright law - it has no allowance for private copying (backups, format shifting, keeping a copy in my house, a copy in the car etc etc).

I believe that I should be able to listen to the music that I paid for on any and all of my devices, one of the many reasons I’m one of the Founding Thousand for the Open Rights Group.

Suw Charman, our Exec Director has posted an e-petition on the 10 Downing St. site to try and get the law changed.

We the undersigned petition the Prime Minister to create a new exception to copyright law that gives individuals the right to create a private copy of copyrighted materials for their own personal use, including back-ups, archiving and shifting format.

Join her, us and me by signing the petition.

Good night, and good luck.

World Anti DRM day

Tuesday, October 3rd, 2006

Yay for hactivism. Today is International Day Against DRM and there’s lots going on.

Not sure what I’ll be doing - probably speaking like a prirate :-)

Update & Note to self: Today is also one of my best friend’s birthdays. Happy Birthday Sian.
