What can a geek do in increase the likelyhood of actually getting of his butt and doing some exercise? Gadgets of course! I’m not talking about counting calories (as life is too short) but real, hardcore tech. I’ve inadvertently gone all Nike at this point, but other brands will do.

Heart Rate Monitor: I found it surprising how little you have to do in order to raise your heart rate to in ‘the zone’. When I started running I quickly discovered that setting the speed of the treadmill to what I ‘thought’ was about right was causing me to go over my max heart rate, which explained why I could only manage about 15 mins before I had to stop, huffing and puffing and a bad case of stich.

So I had to take the plunge and buy an iPod in order to endulge my geekness with this one.
A sensor in my shoe transmits a signal to a receiver that’s plugged into the iPod. It keeps track of time, pace and distance.
